Alice Millicent Joyce Stewart had her first teaching job not far from the family farm on Hope River Road in Chilliwack. She was a 1942 graduate of Vancouver Normal School, across from City Hall where teachers were trained. Joyce, who was known for her beautiful singing voice, earned $78 a month as a first-year teacher. She was a saver and, seven years later, was able to put half the money down on the car.Her new Chevy cost $2,416.12 including license, registration, $65 in tax and carrying charges. She would make payments of $67.52 for the next 24 months to pay off the remaining $1,200. COMMENTSSHARE YOUR THOUGHTS Her Chevy coupe would be her transportation back and forth to her elementary school classroom, and also on adventures with her gal pals. She loved her little car and the following summer took her mother on a cross-Canada trip with Montreal as the eastern destination. She had to leave her car safely stored on the farm while she went on a teachers exchange to England, organized by the Overseas Education League of Canada. She met her future husband at a dance in Chilliwack. They would eventually marry and move to Salmon, where Rudy managed the local Overwaitea supermarket. The Chevy coupe became the couple’s only transportation after Rudy sold his car to pay for their first home – fittingly, an old log schoolhouse. With a growing family and a move back to the coast, Joyce gave her beloved Chevy to her mother who continued to live in Chilliwack. Millie Stewart would proudly drive the aging coupe to the bowling green and the curling rink well into her Eighties. “I can remember many a times with my grandmother as a kid riding in the back seat of the Chevy,” Janice Ungaro fondly recalls. “My Mom named her Miss Misty and that’s the name that stayed.”The car was never to be sold – it would stay in the family. Janice had moved to Los Angeles as a standup comedian and radio show writer and producer. In 2009, she returned to Vancouver to look after her ailing mother, who was determined that the daughter who had always been interested in her old Chevy would be the third generation family member to own her.Now a weekday talk show host on Vancouver’s Roundhouse Radio sharing the afternoon drive spot with co-host Cory Ashworth, Janice makes monthly trips to Los Angeles to produce and record the Jillian Michaels Radio Show. And the Chevy coupe her mother bought 68 years ago continues to be a very important feature in her life. Janice’s mother passed away in 2010. Her father, who passed last year, had the car repainted once, the original grey colour. The seat cover that had protected the front seat from new has been removed, revealing a near flawless original interior.“Grandma had poor vision in her right eye so the right side of the Chevy got scuffed up a bit while the driver’s side is perfect,” Janice says. She plans to work on her car herself and maintain the Chevy.“It’s so simple under the hood so I’d like to learn more about mechanics and drive her more,” she says. “I would like to take her to the A & W and talk cars with all the other old car owners and maybe join a club to be part of something.”But most of all, Miss Misty is an homage to her mother, a petite and elegant woman who looked after her things and kept her Chevy in beautiful condition. It’s also a tribute to her grandmother, who also loved the old car and drove it right up to her last days.
