North Korea Proclaims Nuclear Fusion Success

first_img North Korea tries to accelerate building of walls and fences along border with China The publication of the North Korean Workers’ Party, Rodong Shinmun reported today that North Korea has developed the ability to create nuclear fusion reactions. The publication trumpeted the news in an article, “Success of Nuclear Fusion in Our Country,” saying, “Chosun scientists have succeeded in creating a nuclear fusion reaction. This success is a remarkable display of our cutting-edge scientific technology developing swiftly under the wise leadership of the Party.” It added, “During this process, a thermonuclear device was designed and produced in our own unique way, the basic study of nuclear fusion reactions was completed, and thereafter strong scientific and technological capacity was prepared so that we can build thermonuclear technology with our own power.” Rodong Shinmun asserted, “The international scientific world has great interest in nuclear fusion technology as a way of creating infinite new, safe, environmentally-friendly energy. Our scientists have opened wide the door to a breakthrough in developing this new energy source by succeeding in creating nuclear fusion.” Nuclear fusion is the method used to create part of the explosive power in thermonuclear bombs, and is much more powerful than nuclear fission alone. Fusion generates energy by fusing lighter atomic nuclei into heavier nuclei at extremely high temperatures. However, while fusion reactions have been created, they have never been brought under control or used as a means of generating power. Regarding the Rodong Shinmun claim, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification said, “The Ministry is checking out whether or not it is true; we are examining the possibility of North Korean success with other related organizations.” She added, “It is not a good time to confirm the administration’s official stance.”However, one anonymous Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade official called the claim “absurd,” while an anonymous expert on North Korea interpreted it as a tactic to sow uncertainty in South Korea.Lee Jae Ki from the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Hanyang University in Seoul explained in an interview with The Daily NK, “For a country with atom bomb, it is not a difficult work to produce hydrogen bombs.” However, he went on to dismiss the North Korean claims, saying, “Nuclear fusion technology is one that even developed countries have not succeeded in, and in which enormous amount of funds have been invested. It is not clear yet but by around 2030 they might succeed. The North’s claim must be an empty menace implying that they are able to build hydrogen bombs.” News News By Daily NK – 2010.05.12 3:47pm SHARE Facebook Twitter There are signs that North Korea is running into serious difficulties with its corn harvest center_img News AvatarDaily NKQuestions or comments about this article?
