African players in Europe: Mahrez stars for champions City

first_imgAlgeria winger and 2016 African Footballer of the Year Riyad Mahrez created the second goal and scored the third for Manchester City as they won a second successive Premier League title. He was the stand-out African in Europe at the weekend as star-stacked City triumphed 4-1 at lowly Brighton to pip Liverpool by one point after a thrilling race.A Mahrez corner allowed Aymeric Laporte to nod City into a 2-1 first-half lead and the north African struck the third goal on 63 minutes to put his side firmly on the path to glory.ENGLANDRIYAD MAHREZ (Manchester City)City dominated the second half at Brighton and with 63 minutes gone the 28-year-old Algerian cut in from the wing and unleashed a right-foot shot that gave his club a 3-1 advantage. France-born Mahrez has two Premier League winners medals having been part of the Leicester City side that sensationally became champions three years ago.SADIO MANE (Liverpool)Senegalese Mane scored twice in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Wolves to earn a share of the Premier League’s Golden Boot award. Senegal forward, 27, ended the season with 22 league goals, level with teammate and last year’s winner Mohamed Salah of Egypt as Liverpool finished on 97 points, one behind Manchester City.PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG (Arsenal)Arsenal forward Aubameyang grabbed a share of the Premier League Golden Boot award with two goals in a 3-1 win at Burnley on the last day of the season. The Gabon forward’s goals meant he finished with 22 in the league — the same number as Mane and Salah.SPAINKARL TOKO EKAMBI (Villarreal)Ekambi scored his 18th goal of the season to fire Villarreal to a 1-0 win over Eibar in La Liga. Cameroon forward struck the winner in the 59th minute for his sixth goal in nine matches. Villarreal’s victory leaves them 14th in the table ahead of their last game of the season away to Getafe next weekend.DJENE DAKONAM (Getafe)Getafe’s Dakonam scored an own-goal in a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona. The Togolese poked into his own net as Lionel Messi looked to pounce on a one-two with Sergi Roberto at Camp Nou. Arturo Vidal had already put Barca ahead as Getafe slipped out of the top four, with a final game at home to Villarreal to come next weekend.ITALYMUSA BARROW (Atalanta)Gambian international Barrow broke through immediately after being introduced as a substitute at the break. His first goal this season in a 2-1 win over Genoa put Atalanta third in Serie A and close to a first Champions League qualification.MEHDI BOURABIA (Sassuolo)Moroccan midfielder Bourabia put Sassuolo ahead after 27 minutes against Torino but was sent off immediately after for a second yellow card after celebrating by pulling his jersey over his head, as his side fell to a 3-2 defeat.GERMANYANTHONY UJAH (Mainz)The Nigerian scored twice in four minutes soon after half-time to give Mainz a 2-0 Bundesliga win at Eintracht Frankfurt, who were beaten on penalties by Chelsea in a Europa League semi-final last Thursday. It was a surprise result as Frankfurt are six places above Mainz and the loss completed a disastrous eight days for Eintracht after a 6-1 drubbing at Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.IHLAS BEBOU (Hanover)Togolese striker Bebou found the net for Hanover against Freiburg, but even a 3-0 win was not enough to save his side from relegation. Bebou prodded the ball in from close range to score Hanover’s second as they picked up only a fifth win of the season.SALOMON KALOU (Hertha Berlin)Ivorian veteran Kalou scored an injury-time penalty to snatch a late 4-3 victory for Hertha in an entertaining dead-rubber in Augsburg. Hertha went behind three times, but Kalou equalised after 75 minutes before completing his brace from 12 yards with the last kick of the game.CHADRAC AKOLO (Stuttgart)Democratic Republic of Congo international Akolo made his first appearance since February as Stuttgart secured the relegation play-off place with a 3-0 win over Wolfsburg. The midfielder fell out of favour under former coach Markus Weinzierl, but interim boss Nico Willig welcomed Akolo back into the fold on Saturday.AMADOU HAIDARA (RB Leipzig)The Mali international came off the bench as Leipzig spoiled Bayern Munich’s title party with a 0-0 draw. Bayern missed the chance to wrap up a seventh consecutive title as Borussia Dortmund clawed back two points with a win over Fortuna Duesseldorf to send the title race to the wire.NASSIM BOUJELLAB (Schalke)Midfielder Boujellab, who has played for Morocco at under-23 level, set up Guido Burgstaller for Schalke’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen. Burgstaller’s goal saw Leverkusen miss out on the chance to break into the top four and take pole position in the race for Champions League qualification.FRANCEMAXWEL CORNET (Lyon)The Ivorian doubled his meagre league tally for the season with two goals in a 3-0 win at Marseille. Cornet controlled a wayward long-range shot from teammate Houssem Aouar, holding off a pair of defenders to slot home the opening goal on 25 minutes. He then raced clear after another Aouar pass to stroke home Lyon’s third late on as they pulled four points clear in the final Champions League qualifying spot.last_img read more

Portland Trail Blazers new logo

first_img Share on other sites Posted May 9, 2017 its one of my favorite sports logos because the idea/concept of it is so unique. the movement and relationship to the sport condensed into a single mark that actually makes sense. where most would have taken a basketball (or any other piece of sporting equipment if it were another sport) and slapped a letter inside of it, or set it on fire, this logo goes around all of that to complete what is a truly unique and clever mark. the only thing i ever questioned about it was the execution, and they’ve addressed that somewhat. 1,457 Sports Logo News Lights Out 2 86 Members 5,
 22,644 Posted May 10, 2017 Next So pardon my ignorance but what is the pinwheel logo supposed to be or represent and does anyone know how it came about? tweaks Sign in to follow this   17 hours ago, anythinglogos said: Location:America Prev 175 Jonah Henderson Recommended Posts I don’t know if the team is using the pinwheel as a P in that ad… that looks more like problematic responsive coding to me. Posted May 9, 2017 Gothamite Share on other sites Share this post portland trail blazers I can see the P, but it’s not nearly obvious enough that they can get away with using the logo in lieu of a regular P. It’d be kind of like using an interlocking baseball logo like the Yankees’ NY, or Giants’ SF with times new roman font. It just doesn’t work in that context. It’s also weird that the logo being a B and a P has the be in front, so it’s like Blazers Portland. And their full name is Trail Blazers and there’s no T. Everything about this team’s branding is weird now that I think about it.  8 minutes ago, SilverBullet1929 said: im hoping the new uniforms will make use of what seems obvious, to pull those lines from the logo and incorporate them into striping or a pattern. otherwise, i think they missed a big opportunity with the wordmark, which is as plain as it gets and doesn’t pair so well with the icon. still, even if the uniforms don’t do that, there’s the opportunity for a custom typeface to be used in marketing pieces. i’m just trying to a way/reason to use those lines elsewhere; that’s a really key feature in this identity 3,076 4,356 Share this post … The most obvious change is that the red part of the pinwheel is now on top — it was previously on the bottom — and the bottom part of the pinwheel is now white rather than silver. The other “big” change is that the lines which comprise the two parts of the pinwheel are now connected by a straight diagonal line of the same color.  As for other changes, the font has been updated — there are now serifs on both the “P” and “T” — and the lines are now at a 45 degree angle, which according to the team represents “the 45th Parallel North that leads on a path to the Northwest region.” Anyone who has driven over and over again past that 45th Parallel sign on I-5 in Salem can attest to that. …While the team did consider rotating the pinwheel back to a vertical orientation, as was the case on the original logo, for whatever reason, the decision was made to keep it diagonal. 775 posts Members Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 5,076 Link to post Share this post Share on other sites 3,760 Share on other sites 3,760 Link to post SilverBullet1929 Members Members Share on other sites 210 5,935 posts Gothamite UnclearInitial Posted May 9, 2017 And the fact that they’re still actively using it as a letter, albeit the wrong letter, indicates that they haven’t completely gone away from that original intention.  Somebody may think that’s a P, but it isn’t. On this update, I like how the lines now connect in the center, and the width between the inner black lines is more consistent. Overall a nice update to the NBA’s most unique logo, but I’m not so sure I like the word mark with just the P and T having sharp points on them. I wish they kept oblique lettering of some kind. Toronto206 5,076 Location:DC area Location:Provo, Utah 4 22,644 jaha32 Share this post 2 BrandMooreArt Other than that, this is a great update. The pinwheel placed within a black rhombus with “Portland” above the pinwheel and “Trail Blazers” below was actually the team’s primary logo, but nobody really liked it and it was difficult to deal with from a design perspective, so it’s now been scrapped. Most fans don’t seem to know that logo was the team’s primary, which just goes to show how infrequently it was used, which was in no way an accident. 2,958 posts Link to post Location:Dzekoburgh 13,075 6,949 still not quite there Share this post Gothamite 3 3,760 8,685 Gothamite All Activity Share on other sites 269 Share this post 26,359 posts 2,000 3,076 269 1 Red Wolf Share on other sites I think we all may be missing the best part of the new logo — it’s not a roundel!!  2 6 What is that supposed to be?  “bresented by Moda”?  “qresented by Moda”?    26,438 posts what the hell is ccslc? 5,076 13,075 Link to post WSU151 4,356 Link to post Portland Trail Blazers new logo 5 Agreed. Always loved their logo. It’s a true icon and the spiky one they’ve been using made it overly busy. In business logo design we tend to let more abstract works pass because businesses deal in thoughts and ideas while sports tend to be more concrete and obvious, but when your name is something like Trail Blazers an abstraction is the best way to go rather than a covered wagon or a flaming basketball like you said. Your second paragraph is my only complaint. In their animation (good job by whoever did it) there is a brief second where all of the lines are open and then are closed and it looks better without it.  Flip the pinwheel around, and it would be so much better.  Got it – thanks for the correction! Share this post 1 That said, this is a solid update to the old pinwheel design. It’s been around long enough, and looks good enough that I’m sure there’d be a revolt if it changed too much. Growing up in the 90’s, I’d always been partial to the italicized font because, well, that’s always been the Blazers look I’ve known. But getting older and getting more into design, I’ve come to really appreciate the 70’s font and see that it works even better with the pinwheel than the 90’s-current wordmarks have. I prefer it now. The silver always seemed like an inappropriate accent color to use in the pinwheel, and I think most Blazers fans would agree that switching back to a primarily red/black/white color scheme is more fitting. I’m fine with them keeping gray(s) as secondary colors to be used sparingly for merchandising and promotional materials, and possibly even the alternate uniforms, but the main scheme should absolutely be red/black/white. 53,284 posts Posted May 9, 2017 2 Link to post Joe InGOAT 22,644 5 My biggest gripe is the refusal to use the 70’s font full time. Not capitalizing on that is just stupid Page 1 of 10   2 I’m not sure it’s supposed to be seen as a letter, ever since they angled the lines years ago.  When it was vertical, yeah, it could probably be interpreted as a letter, but I think they are intent on it being a 5-on-5 pinwheel angled 45 degrees.   Followers 3 Posted May 9, 2017 I presume this is already being discussed in a mega thread, but it’s worth a conversation on its own: the Trail Blazers unveiled new logos yesterday.  five boroughs, one City.
