The Director of Veteran Student Services reports to the AssociateDean and Director of Multicultural Affairs. The Director providesoversight and leadership for the day to day operations of theVeteran Student Services Office (VSS). The position will providecomprehensive services and programs to active duty service members,reservists, veterans, and their family members. The Director isresponsible for administering critical operations of VeteranStudent Services and ensuring the university, local, state andfederal policies, procedures, and regulations related to VeteranStudent Services are properly administered. The position directsinternal operational standards, policies and procedures, andregulatory compliance as it relates to Department of VeteransAffairs and Department of Defense educational benefits.Duties include: managing funds by developing the annualdepartmental budget and controlling expenditures; seeking outcommunity partners for growth opportunities connecting Veterans andtheir families with professional development prospects, services,and resources in the Chattanooga area and beyond; designing anddelivering presentations to groups of prospective student veteransat college/career fairs, community colleges, military bases,veteran’s organizations and other events; developing andimplementing effective recruitment and outreach strategies toincrease veteran and active military enrollment; explores newinitiatives that positively shape the UTC veterans’ experience;communicating and collaborating with student services staff,faculty, and administrators to envision, implement, and/or promoteefforts aimed toward the retention and success of student veteransand military affiliated students; ensuring university compliancewith federal, state, and other agencies by developing policies,procedures, and interoffice forms and processes, as appropriate, tocomply with Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense,State Tuition Assistance, and other entities governing veterans’and military educational benefits; building, sustaining, andimproving relationships with campus personnel relevant to studentveterans and military affiliated students and/or the programs thatsupport them; serving as the primary point of contact for FederalMilitary Tuition Assistance – portal course and program catalogs,processing grades, and graduation certification;In addition, the Director serves as the primary point of contactfor the Tennessee Army National Guard Education Services Team andTN Strong Act students; forecasts, leads, manages, and evaluatesthe unit while providing student veterans with a variety ofresources within the campus community, student organizations, andacross the local community; creates and/or modifies programs toensure they are current, reflective of UTC student needs, andemerging best practices in higher education; oversees the planningand implementing of departmental assessment and effectivenessactivities for accreditation, strategic planning, and otherdivision assessment projects; initiates, sustains, and/or improvesconnections with local, regional, and national employers interestedin hiring student veterans; facilitates a work environment thatencourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills toengage with those of other cultures and backgrounds; conductsbenchmarking studies with aspirational and peer institutions toidentify emerging practices; maintains knowledge of proposed andenacted federal legislation which affects veterans’ and militaryeducational benefits, programs, and services; researches andapplies for additional funding sources including but not limited togrants to support and enhance program services; annually appliesfor recognition while assessing UTC’s progress against acceptedcriteria: Best for Vets, Military Friendly, and other identifieddesignations; serves as Advisor for the Student VeteranOrganization; and contributes to the overall success of VeteranStudent Services by performing all other duties andresponsibilities as assigned.The ideal candidate will possess the following: Knowledge of VA education benefits and military tuitionassistance benefitsKnowledge of federal and state legislation, rules, regulations,policies and procedures pertaining to veteran and militaryaffiliated student educational benefits Knowledge of local, state,and federal veterans’ resourcesInterpersonal and listening skills to effectively communicatewith individuals with diverse multicultural backgroundsAbility to manage detailed and complex administrativeprocessesAbility to effectively manage staffAbility to work in collaborative environments as well asindependentlyAbility to utilize computer technology to input/access data,maintain records, review and generate reportslast_img read more
